Question: How can an Australian move to the US permenantly?

( Back )

Answer #1:

Go to an immigration lawyer. Through marriage or not, if you want permanent residency you have to apply for a green card, and it is a long and paperwork intensive process. Most green card applicants and holders (people who have lived in the US with a green card for years) use an immigration lawyer, as the slightest mistake can result in your claim being denied and having to start all over, and it's simply safer to go with an immigration lawyer who can ensure that mistakes are not made and give you the best chance of being awarded a green card. The same is for when people come here on a green card, it has to be periodically renewed and the slightest missed deadline can result in deportation. A lawyer may cost more, but it may also be the only reliable way.
